Socks Whitmore (they/them/theirs) is a gender non-conforming Los Angeles-based performer, creative, and storyteller rooted in voice and text.
A lyric soprano with a four octave range, Socks’s singing style focuses on musical theater and storytelling song, but their experience ranges from pop to choral to opera to singing with electronics to free improvisation and beyond. Socks has worked as a session singer on numerous indie film sound tracks and is a current member of the CalArts Contemporary Vocal Ensemble (CVE) and the Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles (C3LA). Their focus on new musical theater specifically has led them to originating roles in multiple shows such as Children Cannot Sleep, The Bully Problem, and in their original works We Are Here and Back to One: A Coming of Self Musical.
As a composer, Socks specializes in lyrics and music for voice, most especially in musical theater. They may also be found writing music for choreographers, mixed and treble choirs, improvisatory piano, fixed media, or even small instrumental ensembles.
Socks is also a voice over artist, stage actor, and writer of all mediums. Their poetry, short fiction, and op-eds have been published in several places, including the Sappho Small Talk blog and the American Composers Forum multimedia hub I Care If You Listen.
